Paint a Waterfall in Acrylic

Saturday 9th December

Scaleber Force

 11am to 4pm

A Saturday workshop at Norden Farm Centre for the Arts, Maidenhead SL6 4PF

A waterfall in full flood is one of the most exciting things to paint. We will learn to paint brush strokes that really go with the flow of rushing water.  To make the waterfall convincing involves understanding the supporting landscape, light, and especially the tonal contrasts.  We will look at how this has been achieved by American and European artists before painting our own pictures.  For full details and booking visit http://www.nordenfarm.org

Saturday 11th November

These make delightful Christmas gifts or unique cards.  You may choose to work in a representational way or in a more abstract way with repeated shapes and patterns as in the sample illustrated. Negative Painting

Six Tuesdays: September 5, 12, 19, 26, October 3, 10

12.30pm to 3.30pm

A short course at Norden Farm Centre for the Arts, Maidenhead SL6 4PF

Negative painting involves painting around shapes and objects rather than painting the objects themselves.  Very beautiful layered effects can be made in this way inspired by subjects like trees in a forest and overlapping cascades of leaves.  Starting with simple shapes we will also discover ways of painting more abstract compositions in a similar way, or by using found and made masks.  Watercolour is excellent for this but acrylic used as fluid washes also works well and there is no danger of lower layers lifting. Full details can be seen and bookings made by visiting  http://www.nordenfarm.org

Acrylic Painting: Glazing and Collage Techniques

25th April to 30th May

Six Tuesdays 12.30pm to 3.30pm

Norden Farm Centre for the Arts, Maidenhead SL6 4PF

Glazing techniques historically used with oil paints can be much more rapidly achieved in acrylic.  It is also very easy to incorporate collaged elements.  This course explores ways to include collage and how to apply glazes to painted and collaged areas.  Starting with some experimental exercises, over the six weeks we will go on to create works with a variety of subject matter; still life, landscape, building or interior.

Heavy weight mixed media paper and small off-cuts of mount board will be available from the tutor at cost.  Please bring your own materials. To find detailed info on materials and to book your place visit: www.nordenfarm.org

Blue and Brown make Grey: Watercolour or Gouache

22nd April

Saturday Workshop 11.00am to 4.00pm

Norden Farm Centre for the Arts Maidenhead SL6 4PF

A colour mixing workshop to help you mix colours for rocky landscapes, stone walls, weathered surfaces and shadows etc.  These are also invaluable for still life studies involving neutral stoneware or dried seed heads. These coloured greys mixed from primary colours, complementary colours or as the title suggests from blue and brown can give a painting unity where the pigments used appear elsewhere in the work. Colour mixing exercises will be followed by painting a grey or rocky landscape or grey still life object.  Landscape reference supplied or bring your own.  Please bring your own materials.

Mixing Greens for Landscape: Watercolour or Gouache

11th March 11.00am to 4.00pm

Saturday Workshop

Norden Farm Centre for the Arts, Maidenhead SL6 4PF

Colour mixing exercises followed by a landscape painting.

“I haven’t got the right green.”, “I can’t mix the right green.”, or “This green is unnatural.”, are frequent comments I hear at landscape sessions.  This workshop will help you to use primary colours to mix the greens you need and also how to tame some of the fiercer greens in your box to create really useful natural looking greens by mixing with other colours.  Reference supplied or bring your own.  Please bring your own materials.  To find more info on materials and to book your place visit: www.nordenfarm.org
