Stencils and Lifting out: Watercolour Workshop

Saturday 4th May

10.00am – 3.00pm

Norden Farm Centre for the Arts, Maidenhead SL6 4PF

The first of two watercolour workshops where we explore ways of creating shapes and textures as compositions in their own right, or for use alongside conventional brush strokes and washes.  Working in these ways may also produce interesting papers for collage.

In this workshop we will use objects either as stencils for spattering or for lifting out paint to make imaginative or abstract compositions. These may be developed further with additional washes and brush strokes.

Oil Pastel: as a resist for watercolour or gouache

Saturday December 2

10.00am – 3.00pm

Norden Farm Centre for the Arts Maidenhead SL6 4PF

Oil pastel washed with watercolour or gouache gives a unique texture.  Inspired by mixed media works by John Piper we will draw with waterproof ink and oil pastel, before washing with colour and watching the pastel break through.  The session will start with experiments with different colours and tones of pastel and different strengths of wash.  Pale pastel with a dark strong wash gives the most dramatic effect. More subtle effects can be achieved where pastel and wash are nearer in tone and hue.  References are supplied but you are encouraged to bring your own sketch or photograph
