What is a Line? Drawing Course

15th Jan to 19th Feb 2019

Six Tuesdays 10.00am to 1.00pm

Norden Farm Centre for the Arts, Maidenhead SL6 4PF

Using pencil, charcoal, and ink with brushes, pens and a variety of other tools, this drawing course explores line and mark making to produce representational and more intuitive drawings.  Suitable for beginners it will be presented in a way that should also be inspiring for those who are more experienced.  Starting with line the course goes on to explore; tone as it relates to colour, form, and pattern; lighting and chiaroscuro; negative spaces; acuity and simple perspective. Please supply your own materials.  Reference materials will be provided for the first session and reference for subsequent sessions will be discussed then.

Tickets from the Box Office; www.nordenfarm.org or Tel. 01628 788997

Colour and Shape 1

Saturday 2nd February

Watercolour Workshop 10.00am to 3.00pm

Norden Farm Centre for the Arts, Maidenhead SL6 4PF

This first workshop on shape and colour will be inspired by the works of August Macke, who along with Louis Moillet visited Tunisia with Paul Klee in 1914.  Using watercolour we will explore the colours and patterns of North Africa, especially Morocco and Tunisia. Photographic reference from Morocco of mountains, terraces, rural villages and small towns, Kasbahs and desert, donkeys and the occasional camel, will be supplied or bring your own.  Please bring your own materials.  Watercolour paper will be available at cost.

Tickets from the Box office at www.nordenfarm.org or call 01628 788997

Colour and Shape 2

Saturday 2nd March

Watercolour Workshop 10.00am to 3.00pm

Norden Farm Centre for the Arts, Maidenhead SL6 4PP

In this second workshop we will explore harmonious and discordant colour combinations. The first part of the workshop will be spent making small abstract paintings exploring what happens when an unrelated hue is included with two closely related colours, followed by making a more considered painting. Our reference artists will be Matisse, and Craigie Aitchison.

Please bring gouache or watercolour and a reference if you wish to make a representational painting.  Some reference material will be available and paper will be available at cost.

Tickets from the box office at www.nordenfarm.org or call 01628 788997

Soft Pastel: Which Surface?

5th March to 9th April

Six Tuesdays 10.00am to 1.00pm at Norden Farm Centre for the Arts, Maidenhead SL6 4PF

Each week we will experiment with a different pastel support for soft pastels.  With such a variety of coloured and textured papers for pastel available, it can be hard to choose.  This course will enable you to try a variety of papers and how to prepare some of your own surfaces.  There will be a materials charge of about £7.00 to cover the cost of sample packs of small pieces of coloured, sanded and velour papers and also gesso, pumice powder and mount board off cuts for preparing your own surfaces. Please bring your own pastels and equipment.  Reference material will be discussed at the first session and during the course will include still life, plant forms and buildings.

Tickets from the Box Office at www.nordenfarm.org or call 01628 788997

Drawing with Coloured Pens

Saturday 16th March

Drawing Workshop 10.00am to 3.00pm

Norden Farm Centre for the Arts, Maidenhead SL6 4PF

Nearly all of us have a variety of coloured pens; ball point, gel, brush pens and paint pens etc. but their potential for drawing is not always realised.  Bring whatever you have, plus a brush and water pot for pens with water soluble ink and some cartridge paper and we’ll mark make, doodle, and think visually before launching into making intuitive drawings or a representational drawing from the objects or photographic reference supplied.  Jo will have a variety of pens with her that you may like to try and also some paper (cartridge and watercolour) will be available at cost.

Tickets from the Box Office at www.nordenfarm.org or call 01628 788997

Castle and Countryside: Painting in and around Bardi in the Parma Apennines

Wednesday 8th May to Thursday 16th May 2019

Jo is tutoring a painting holiday at Casa Bezzia in the tiny hamlet of Pietracervara near Bardi in the hills above Parma.  This is a beautiful and relatively undiscovered part of northern Italy.  Bardi is an ancient town dominated by a medieval fortress on a prominence overlooking the valley of the Ceno river.  Drawing and painting in watercolour, we will visit sites including hill top villages, Bardi Castle, the bustling Bardi market, rocky riverbanks, and also a cheese factory producing the iconic Parmesan.  Other media can be accommodated in the well equipped studio.  For further information and booking inquiries visit www.casabezzia.com or contact  Sylvia Bell, E-mail: info@casabezzia.com or call +39 052571370

Transfers from Bologna airport are provided and the plan is to meet there early enough to travel on as a group to Pietracervara, should you book the course and arrive by air.  My flight arrives late morning and it would be good if everyone could arrive at Bologna by early afternoon.

Having just spent a few days at Casa Bezzia I can thoroughly recommend its peaceful location, the delightful countryside and Sylvia’s hospitality.  A materials list will be forwarded in good time but if you have any queries concerning materials or course content, do contact me by E-mail: johall@mhstudios.co.uk
